The Need for Dance
Germany; 2022
The documentary seeks to investigate and immerse itself in the universe of the underground parties held in Berlin during the coronavirus lockdown in 2020-2021. With characters who took part in them, organized them, or worked there, the audience goes through the contrast between the concepts of individual freedom and social responsibility.
The film seeks to materialize this contrast in an audio-visual dichotomy. On the one hand, the language of the sound. There was created the verbal sound universe, which was divided into two layers. Voices of characters mix with techno music, creating colorful "collages" of the multiplicity of opinions, facts, and angles of view. On the other hand, the language of the image. You will see landscapes of the spaces where these parties took place. Frozen, uninhabited, solitary spaces, left by people. And there are dancing people like ghosts in the abandoned city streets. They are dancing, but the dance vanishes. The dance turned into phantasmagoria with a blur, smeared, fuzzy movements of shadows, representing the consequences of evading social responsibility.
The conjunction of this dichotomy reflects the complexity of the film's central theme and the different readings and positions that it can provoke in the spectator.
